Sports PUBLISHED:
In late May, he won the TT at the North Central Region nationals in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The veteran racer now plans to compete in the State championships at his home track September 23-24. Lucky Thumb track is located on Bevens Rd., three miles north of M-46, and just south of M-53. The club has been the site for many state championships over the years. Lucky Thumb is holding its final set of District 14 races this weekend, with Short Track races on Saturday, July 26, and TT Scrambles on Sunday, July 27. Shaw, who hopes to get a tune-up for State with a race this Sunday, is hoping motorcycle fans will come out and help support the upcoming events at Lucky Thumb. "It's one of the best quality tracks in the nation right now," said Shaw, who is hoping the club will get a Regional national event in the near future. "There will be a lot of local guys racing -- guys from Marlette, Decker, Sandusky. There's going to be some vintage classes, too - guys with older bikes, and there' a classÉ for four-wheelers." Shaw has a chance at the State championships to claim the high-points jacket in his class for the first time in 30 years after winning all three of his races in Michigan this season. Shaw was a state champion in 1978 and then, basically, got out of racing until the last couple of years. In DuQuoin in early July, Shaw said that "an act of God" enabled him to win his class on his reliable KTM. "I had a poor first race and I was put in the back row," explained Shaw. He said, for the finals, there were six riders in the front row and he was among six in the next row. "I didn't think I had a prayer at getting to the podium," he remarked. The first six riders went tightly into the first turn, but then he added, "About three-feet of room opened up and I got from the back row to the lead." Shaw kept the lead the rest of the way. At the North Central Region races in Wisconsin, Shaw was at his best in winning the TT Scramble in the Super Senior 50+ class. He edged out a local rider that had never lost on the Beaver Dam track.
