Sports PUBLISHED:
Christine Farrow, a senior from Detroit Renaissance, won the 800 (2:14.54). Meggan Freeland of ParmaWestern was first in the 1600 (4:59.36). "Leah did a nice job of positioning herself in both races and was right in both of those," said C-L coach Lisa Shaw. "She's just a great competitor. This is the first time she's been beaten all year, but she hasn't ran against (these girls). You have to run against the best to do your best." Kreiner, a senior at Brown City, saved her best for last in the high jump. After a good start to the season, clearing 5'1" early on, she struggled to find consistency and improvement. However, it all came together in the last week. First, she won the high jump with a personal-best of 5'2" at the Thumb Meet of Champions in Caro and then produced another effort of 5'2" for second place in the Division 4 finals at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern. Sarah McCourtney of Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest had the winning height of 5'5". "(Brandie's) such a hard worker. I don't really know what happened to her way back early in the season." said Coach Leslie Haxer of Brown City. "She went to Caro and got over it... and Saturday was exciting. The thing is, though, she rolled her ankle Tuesday after going 5'2" (at Caro). We didn't know what she would do at State, but she worked through it." Six more girls from Sanilac brought home medals. At the Division 3 finals at Comstock Park, Sandusky's Marissa DeMott was tied for fourth place in the high jump. The Lady Redskin sophomore went 5'1". In Division 4, Deckerville's Dana Stolicker claimed a pair of medals. The junior placed eighth in the 800 meter run in 2:27.79 and ran the anchor leg on the sixth place 1600 meter relay team (4:17.88). Also on the relay team were Shelby McVittie, Mandy Nichol, and Katelynn Stutterheim. Only two area boys placed at the State Finals, both coming at the Division 3 meet at Comstock Park. Sam Stevens from Sandusky, a senior, tied for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6'3". Meanwhile, Ryan Sabo, a junior, from Marlette finished in eighth place in the pole vault with an effort of 13'. The first place height in the pole vault was 13'9" , three inches off of Sabo's best. |
